I was listening to the Nerdist podcast with Tom Hanks (I think) and he mentioned some story about how the NASA logo was changed from the "Meatball" (blue, spacey circle with a red "rocket" on it) to the "Worm" (the red, connected and stylized NASA letters) and how there was some dispute about it.
It really wasn't that big of a deal, but I wrote the song as though it was such a big deal that NASA shut down because of the warring between the "Worm" camp and the "Meatball" camp.
All hypothetical, of course.
lyrics
Suddenly, a new change has come
This affects everything
I disagree, I can't believe
That this would even be
Something that splits us
Let war be declared among
Those who suffer together
Bread no longer broken
When the table's been stolen
Among this dispute over an image
We're no longer productive
This amounts to nothing more than
A worm and a meatball
Chorus:
We could be doing something big here
We should be reaching for the stars
Yet we're more focused on the big picture
The one that's hanging on the wall
We could be out among the universe
We should plot courses to the moon
Instead of working through our problems
We split with worm and meatball
Everything depends on the outcome
We simply cannot suffer through
The sight of that horrific worm
Stop the presses, pause development
Look! Turn and see the sight
Beyond the stars and moonlight
And all of our dreams come true
Concerned with the image to be
Pressed on our stupid shirts
We're doing something huge here
Where infants someday hope to be
While we wish to be elsewhere
Outside of worms and meatballs
Chorus
I swear, I swear that we can fix this
We're so very close, you just have to choose
What really matters?
A worm or a meatball?
What really matters?
The worm and the meatball?
Chorus
